How to Play Dominion

without comments

It occurred to us that some of our readers might not know how to play the game, so we decided to help you guys out. We’re going to try to give you some simple step-by-step instructions that you can follow. If you have any questions – any questions at all – feel free to ask in our comment section below. Even if we don’t find the time to answer your question, we’re sure one of our lovely visitors will.

What you Need:

  • 2-4 players (up to 6 with Dominion Intrigue expansion)
  • Dominion or Dominion Intrigue Standalone Packages
  • 30 Minutes
  • –That’s it!

Types of Cards

  1. Victory Cards: Have very little value in game; however, at the end of a game, these are tallied to determine a player’s victory points.
  2. Curse Cards: These are a counter to victory cards: they have little value in game; however, at the end of a game, they have a negative effect on one’s victory points.
  3. Treasure Cards: These cards are played during the buy phase of a game to generate a coins; though, they also have other effects.
  4. Action Cards: As the name implies, this card allows a player to generate an action so to speak. By using them, you can gain more cards, coins, affect other players, etc.
  5. Reaction Cards: This is the only card that can be used out of a player’s turn. They are typically used to counter another player’s actions.

Game Play

To get started, the dealer must make 3 different stacks of victory, curse, and treasure cards: that is there are 3 different piles of each said card. For example, you would have 3 different piles of victory cards, etc.

In addition, he must also make 10 different piles of kingdom cards. Each of the said cards above can be pre-selected, or they can be chosen at random, depending on a player’s playing style.

At this point, each player is given 7 copper cards and 3 estate cards; in addition, they must also be dealt five random cards from the deck. Once everybody has a hand, it’s time to play the game. Each player’s turn is divided into three phrases, abbreviated as ABC below:

Action: The player must start with 1 action card during this phase, which means he is able to play an action card, following it’s instructions. Since some cards allow you to play additional action cards, it would be true to say players can play more than 1 action card during the game; however, it must be generated through other action cards.

Buy: During this phase, the player starts with 1 buy and any additional buy phases provided by action cards, which means they are able to play treasure cards in their hands to generate coins; In addition, they can also implement their buys, which allows players to purchase cards from the remaining stacks at the price indicated on the bottom left hand corner of a card.

Cleanup: At this point, the player is obligated to clean up so to speak, discarding cards used during his turn, collecting one’s hand, and drawing five new cards from the deck.

The game will continue in this fashion until one of two conditions are met: The first is when the highest value victory card stack is exhausted. The second is when any three other stacks have been exhausted. Should any of those conditions be met, players count the number of victory points in their deck, and the player with the highest score in the winner.

**Note If at all during the course of the game the deck is exhausted, the discard pile is shuffled and reinstituted as the deck.

Overall, this video will definitely give you your daily recommended dose of Dominion. Definitely worth a watch if you’ve got a minute.

Play Dominion Online

without comments

After doing some research, I was able to find two great websites where you can dominion completely free of charge. Both of which will connect you with Dominion players around the world.

Brettspielwelt: This website is definitely a lot nicer then our second mention. The user interface is colorful, and it’s just overall a better quality. Now, the landing page I’m directing you to is a wiki with some useful information on how to play the game. To actually play the game you’re going to have to click “Instant Play” on the top. When you do that, it’s going to load a JavaScript pop-up that requires an account. If you don’t have an account, then sign up! If you do, sign in and play!

Isotropic: This is another website where you can play dominion online. As we’ve mentioned above, this website isn’t as good as our first mention. However, it would seem that they have a lot more members you can play with. All you have to do to get started is simply click on the link, find a player to versus, and you’re good to go!
